Paving the way in Afganistan

Like many, I watched with emotion, the news broadcasts of the recent eight fallen soldiers being taken through Wootton Bassett on their last homeward journey. I sense a change of mood about this war, I sense the people are sitting up and taking notice.

I don’t normally get political with my posts, but this poignant cartoon from The Times’ Gerald Scarfe says more to me than all the political and news commentary put together.

carnivalbrazil2009
The Carnival Brazil kicked off yesterday in Rio with the opening ceremony which sees the Carnival ‘Fat’ King (Momo) crowned by the mayor.

The festival is celebrated in towns, villages and cities across Brazil, although the main event tends to be in Rio, widely known as the carnival capital of the World.

Over half a million visitors from all corners of the World will poor into Rio de Janerio to celebrate this energetic and colourful carnival for the next few days. On Sunday the visually stunning and raunchy Samba parade will snake through the streets, a scene that has made the carnival so well known across the globe.

The city will come alive with countless balls, parties and general hedonistic fun. It is a time for Brazilians to celebrate their rich culture.
